GM backs mandatory vehicle 'black boxes'

Detroit News -- Washington -- General Motors Co. supports legislation to require so-called "black boxes" in vehicles, to collect crash data, and it is willing to support additional "reasonable" auto safety legislation.

In a roundtable interview with reporters today, GM's new vice president for government relations, Robert E. Ferguson, said the company backs legislation in the works from Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas, to mandate event data recorders.

Such simplistic thinking as this is what gets people in trouble. If I were a used car salesman (no offense to honest used car salesmen), I could sell this guy the Brooklyn Bridge. All I'd have to tell him is that the government didn't build it.

And the "Big Brother" comments are just as silly. Such people have more to fear from themselves than from government.
_____
The reality is that this device could yield some very interesting information that could lead to lives being saved plus other very real benefits. Before I would oppose something like this, opponents would have to come up with a very realistic argument. Paranoia isn't gonna do it for me.

Let them take control of mental health, maybe people will stop overdosing on recreational chemicals.

Besides GM, which other car makers already have the black boxes in their cars (I think that a few others do)?

I am looking for a new HORSE this afternoon. I like to ride Western Saddle but some of my friends ride an English Saddle. You never know when a new HORSE will come in handy. The car manufacturers do not want to sell cars in America. They are selling all the good cars in foreign countries.

The question is, "Who does it belong to."

It has been in GM cars for over 10 years.

I personally, like the whole idea. Though, I do think that they should also put some perimeters in place so that law officials can't just do whatever they want just because the data in the computers is available to them. As for "Big Brother" - that's been in place in a big way since the last administration... so, there's really no need to even worry about that.

There are benefits and drawbacks... benefit in that it can improve cars... drawback, and it's already happening, is that the info can be used against you in a court of law... no miranda rights for your car...

These boxes will be just like airlines where they need to be read out of the vehicle. Think of it this way, GM's on star can already track location and speed.

The liberals want yet another way to keep track of what we do! Expect speeding tickets by computer if they get away with this.

Now they want to be able to keep track of where we have gone!

They are already trying to legislate taking control of our physical health!

Only system failure data should be recorded, not location, speed, etc. otherwise the black box will eventually become a cash register for local speed traps, trial lawyers for civil liability. Besides, a while back they talked about putting a tax on how much a person drives. This would be a great tool for them to do just that.

I say don't buy a car with a Black Box unless they put in writing only system failure data will be recorded.

I want control of my vehicle, You think you have nothing to hide, but data without the picture of what really happened, can be used against you from your own car, this is another Big Brother event coming, the govt is pushing this concept and GM is in no position to argue at the moment, it is packed full of Obama Administration plants (not picking on Obama), Mandatory anything by the government is not a good sign, and it typically leads to even more govt and more costs... This is another Pandora's Box I believe, Mr I dont have anything to hide, well you probably believe that too.

Too bad Toyotas do not already have black boxes. Then it would be easy to tell a FAKE report from a real vehicle safety issue.

Sure they back it. What do they care what our vehicles cost. It will be another excuse from the auto companies why they need to charge so much for its cars.

I think they should have black boxes on big wheel bikes for kids too.

Make the EDRs so they can be read with a laptop and a cheap cable with a USB connector on one side and an OBD-II connector on the other. Also, tell everyone to use the same format while you're at it.

Fascinating article MyVue08. A must read.

Thanks for sharing ;0)

FROM THE ARTICLE:

The recorders collect data for the last five seconds of a crash, including whether the drive is wearing a seatbelt, speed and whether the brakes were applied.

Not all automakers support a black box mandate.

GM began widely installing the predecessor version of today's event data recorders in vehicles in the 1990 model year, and they became standard equipment in light duty vehicles in the 1995 model year.

A device that allows for limited public retrieval of the data in GM event data recorders has been available since 1999. GM also supports wider availability of the crash data stored in EDRs.

Green said that the devices are "essential to ensure consumers are being properly protected in their vehicles."

As long as the cost to retrieve the data is not out of line, look for it to have a big impact in lawsuits.
